The Delhi High Court on Friday allowed the committee of judges examining the proposal to increase the pecuniary jurisdiction of Delhi's district courts to place its report before the Full Court.
A Division Bench of Justices Anil Kshetarpal and Tejas Karia rejected the Delhi High Court Bar Association's (DHCBA) request to stop the report from being tabled. The detailed order is awaited.
The DHCBA had approached the Court seeking a stay on the process. Its application was filed in a pending petition challenging the Full Court's decision to constitute a committee to examine whether the pecuniary jurisdiction of district courts should be increased from ₹2 crore to ₹20 crore.
The committee was constituted following a Full Court meeting held on September 2, 2025. It currently comprises Justices V Kameswar Rao, Nitin Wasudeo Sambre, Dinesh Mehta, Vivek Chaudhary, Prathiba M Singh and Navin Chawla.
The proposal to enhance the jurisdiction was first raised by the Coordination Committee of All District Courts Bar Associations of Delhi, which wrote to Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal and members of the Law Commission in May 2025, seeking an increase in the limit from ₹2 crore to ₹20 crore.
Following this, the Delhi High Court constituted the judges' committee to consult stakeholders and make recommendations on the issue.
The DHCBA, however, has opposed the move. It argued that the Coordination Committee's letter was addressed to the Union Ministry of Law and not to the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court. According to the association, neither the Ministry sought the High Court's views nor initiated any such process, yet the Full Court proceeded to act on the letter.
The Bar Association also contended that no reasons were given for constituting the committee.
Senior Advocate A.S. Chandhiok appeared for the DHCBA, while Advocate Amit George represented the Delhi High Court.
