The Delhi High Court has given interim protection to former cricketer and Team India coach Gautam Gambhir, stopping the misuse of his name and identity.
The bench headed by Justice Jyoti Singh said that Gambhir is one of India’s most respected cricketers, and using his name, image, or reputation for commercial gain without permission is not acceptable. The Court made it clear that such actions violate his personality and publicity rights.
The Court has now restrained several entities and unknown individuals from using Gambhir’s identity without authorisation. This includes AI-generated content like deepfakes, as well as the sale of online merchandise using his name or image.
In his plea, Gambhir told the Court that there is a growing trend of digital impersonation. He pointed out that fake videos are being created using AI tools like face-swapping and voice cloning, making it look like he said things he never actually did.
According to him, such content has increased sharply since 2025 across platforms like Instagram, X, YouTube, and Facebook. One fake “resignation” video even got over 29 lakh views.
He also raised concerns about e-commerce platforms selling posters and other items with his name and image without permission.
After hearing the matter, the Court passed an interim order in his favour. He was represented by advocates Jai Anant Dehadrai and Srutee Priyadarshini.
