The Delhi High Court on Thursday rescheduled the Shahdara Bar Association elections to May 25, postponing the polls originally set for May 9.
The decision was taken by a Bench comprising Justices Prathiba M Singh, Navin Chawla, and C Hari Shankar, in a matter where the Court is actively overseeing elections to various bar associations across the national capital.
Earlier this week, the Court had directed Delhi Police to ensure adequate security at Karkardooma Court, where the Shahdara Bar Association functions. It also instructed the police to take strict measures against any individuals—lawyers or otherwise—who might disrupt or interfere with the election process.
Elections to all bar associations in Delhi, except those at Saket and Shahdara, were successfully held on March 21. However, concerns raised by retired Justice Talwant Singh, who chairs the Shahdara Bar Association Election Committee, regarding inadequate security prompted the Court to seek a detailed report from the police on arrangements for a peaceful and fair election.
At the last hearing, the Court had noted that contesting candidates agreed to bear the cost of using Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). It also allowed only one authorised representative per candidate to be present during the vote count, directing that any supporting voters remain outside the court premises to maintain order.
