Delhi HC Seeks Police Status Report On AAP Worker’s Plea Alleging Assault By Parvesh Verma

The Delhi High Court on Thursday issued notice to the Delhi Police and Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Parvesh Verma on a plea filed by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) worker Sahib Singh, who has alleged that Verma slapped and assaulted him during a road inspection last month.

Justice Sachin Datta directed the Delhi Police to file a status report on Singh’s plea seeking police protection and an independent probe into the alleged incident.

The Court posted the matter for further hearing in November. Meanwhile, counsel appearing for the respondents opposed the plea, arguing that it was not maintainable.

Singh has approached the High Court seeking an independent investigation into his allegation that Verma assaulted him on September 27 during an inspection of road construction work in West Delhi.

He has also sought immediate protection for himself and his family, claiming that he received threats and intimidating messages following the incident.

Singh has urged the High Court to constitute an independent, judicially supervised inquiry committee headed by a former High Court judge to examine the allegations, including CCTV footage, electronic evidence and police records.

According to Singh, he was accompanying AAP MLA Jarnail Singh during an inspection of road construction work along the Outer Ring Road over allegations of substandard materials and deficiencies in the work.

He has alleged that Verma and others confronted him during the inspection, following which he was allegedly slapped, abused and assaulted. Singh further claimed that his mobile phone, which contained recordings of the incident, was forcibly taken and damaged.

He has also alleged that an unidentified person struck him in his private parts.

Singh had earlier lodged a complaint at the Vikas Puri Police Station, following which a non-cognizable report (NCR) was registered under Section 115(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

However, Singh has contended before the High Court that the NCR does not cover the entirety of the allegations made by him.
