The Delhi High Court on Friday sentenced Bollywood actor Rajpal Yadav to three months' simple imprisonment in a cheque bounce case after holding that he repeatedly failed to honour his settlement commitments despite several opportunities.
Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma passed the order in a batch of seven cases filed by M/s Murli Projects Private Limited against Yadav.
The Court sentenced Yadav to three months' simple imprisonment in each of the seven cases. However, all the sentences will run concurrently, meaning he will serve them together.
The High Court also directed Yadav to pay a fine of ₹1.05 crore in each case. Out of this amount, ₹1,04,75,000 in each case will be paid to the complainant, while ₹25,000 will go to the State. If he fails to pay the fine, he will have to undergo an additional six months' simple imprisonment.
Yadav's wife, Radha Rajpal Yadav, was also directed to pay a fine of over ₹5.51 lakh in each case.
The Court noted that Yadav had already deposited ₹2.25 crore during the proceedings, and that amount would be adjusted against the compensation payable to the complainant.
While pronouncing the sentence, Justice Sharma observed that the actor had been given several chances to settle the dispute but did not fulfil the promises made before the Court.
"Opportunities were granted to honour the settlement. He and his counsel made several statements and assurances, and despite these repeated opportunities and assurances, he failed to honour the undertakings," the Court observed.
The Court also granted Yadav two months' time to challenge the judgment before a higher court.
The case has been pending for over two years. In May 2024, a sessions court had convicted Yadav and sentenced him to six months' imprisonment in the cheque bounce case.
The Delhi High Court later suspended his sentence after his counsel assured the Court that the dispute would be settled. The matter was also referred to the Delhi High Court Mediation Centre.
However, the settlement did not materialise. The High Court found that Yadav failed to deposit the amounts he had promised, including ₹2.5 crore, which he had sought permission to pay in instalments.
In February 2026, the Court directed him to surrender before jail authorities for failing to comply with its earlier orders. His plea seeking more time to surrender was also rejected.
Yadav surrendered on February 5 and remained in jail until the High Court granted him interim suspension of sentence after he deposited ₹1.5 crore with the complainant.
Since he failed to pay the remaining amount despite repeated undertakings, the Court has now sentenced him to three months' imprisonment.
