Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk's wife, Dr. Gitanjali Angmo, has approached the Delhi High Court seeking permission to shift her husband from Safdarjung Government Hospital to a private hospital, alleging that he is being illegally detained under the guise of medical treatment. (The Economic Times)
The petition follows Wangchuk's forcible hospitalisation after his prolonged indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar. Angmo has claimed that the family has lost confidence in the treatment being provided at the government-run hospital and raised serious concerns regarding the transparency of his medical care. (The Economic Times)
According to the plea and her public statements, hospital authorities informed the family that Wangchuk's potassium level had dropped to 2.9, describing the condition as alarming and life-threatening. However, she alleged that the hospital's public health bulletin merely referred to "decreasing potassium levels" without disclosing the actual figure. She further claimed that an independent laboratory test showed his potassium level to be 3.5, which the family says falls within the normal range. (The Economic Times)
Angmo has also alleged that despite repeated requests, authorities have refused to discharge Wangchuk or permit his transfer to a private hospital of the family's choice. She further claimed that nearly 30 police personnel were stationed on the hospital floor, with more than 100 police personnel deployed across the hospital premises, severely restricting access to him and the movement of his family members and associates. (The Economic Times)
Describing the situation as "illegal detention" rather than medical care, she stated that the hospital authorities and the government would be responsible if any harm came to Wangchuk. An urgent hearing has been sought before the Delhi High Court seeking permission to transfer him to a private medical facility before his health deteriorates further. (The Economic Times)
Earlier this week, the Delhi High Court had directed the Union Government to ensure daily clinical monitoring of Wangchuk's health while he continues his indefinite hunger strike. (Hindustan Times)
Wangchuk has been on an indefinite hunger strike since June 28 at Jantar Mantar, demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged examination irregularities, including the alleged NEET paper leak. His protest, organised in solidarity with the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), has reportedly entered its third week, during which he is said to have lost over 8 kilograms and experienced declining blood sugar levels.
