Delhi High Court Restrains Unauthorized Streaming of Premier League Matches

Recently, the Delhi High Court granted an ex parte ad interim injunction in favour of Football Association Premier League Limited (FAPL), effectively blocking several unauthorized platforms—including Yoghurt TV, Venus 11, and Nova IPTV—from illegally streaming Premier League football matches in India.

Justice Saurabh Banerjee issued the order while hearing a suit filed by FAPL, the organizer of the English Premier League, seeking a permanent injunction to prevent copyright infringement and unauthorized broadcasting of its content.

In India, exclusive broadcasting rights for Premier League matches are held by Star India.

Recognizing FAPL as the rightful owner of the intellectual property rights—both to its original and licensed works—the Court held that the plaintiff had established a strong prima facie case that merited immediate protection. It noted that the actions of the defendants were carried out without any authorization, title, or interest from the plaintiff.
