Delhi motorists will soon get an additional opportunity to settle pending traffic challans with the launch of Weekend Traffic Courts (WTCs) across the national capital. The initiative, announced by the Delhi District Courts, is aimed at reducing the burden on regular courts while making it easier for vehicle owners to resolve traffic violation cases.
According to an official notice, the Weekend Traffic Courts will begin functioning from July 5, 2026. They will operate on the second Saturday and all Sundays of every month at all district court complexes in Delhi.
The courts will function between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM, with proceedings divided into two sessions — 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM and 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM.
To avail the facility, motorists can download their challan slips from the official Delhi Traffic Police portal using their vehicle registration number. The online challan download service will be available from June 25, 2026, starting at 10:00 AM.
While downloading the challan, vehicle owners will be required to select a preferred court complex, date of appearance, and time slot. On the chosen date, they must appear before the designated court and submit a printed copy of the challan slip to the concerned judge.
The Weekend Traffic Courts will exclusively deal with compoundable traffic offences, which can be settled by payment of a prescribed fine. Cases involving non-compoundable offences and serious violations will continue to be processed through the regular judicial system.
The initiative comes amid a massive backlog of pending traffic violations in Delhi. As of June 15, 2026, Delhi Traffic Police data reportedly showed more than 4.3 crore pending challans and camera-generated notices. This includes over 1 crore on-the-spot challans and nearly 3.3 crore notices issued through automated enforcement mechanisms.
Authorities have clarified that existing avenues for challan settlement will continue to remain available. Eligible cases can still be resolved through the Virtual Court platform, which operates round the clock without requiring physical appearance. Evening courts will also continue functioning on working days from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, while certain matters may be referred to Lok Adalats for bulk disposal.
With the introduction of Weekend Traffic Courts, the judiciary and traffic authorities hope to accelerate the disposal of pending challans, reduce case pendency, and provide a more convenient compliance mechanism for motorists in the city.
