The Bombay High Court has passed an interim order stopping filmmaker Santosh Kumar RS from repeating certain remarks about the script of the Hindi film Dhurandhar, after the film’s writer-director Aditya Dhar alleged that the statements were defamatory.
The bench Justice Arif S Doctor issued the order while hearing a defamation suit filed by Dhar. The Court noted that although Kumar had received notice, he did not appear for the hearing.
After considering the matter, the Court found that Dhar had made a prima facie case and granted limited interim relief. It directed Kumar not to repeat the statements mentioned in the suit or any similar remarks until the next hearing on April 16.
The dispute began after a press conference held shortly after the release of Dhurandhar: The Revenge. During the event, Kumar allegedly accused Dhar and the film’s makers of copying his registered script titled D Saheb.
Dhar denied these allegations and sent a legal notice to Kumar, asking him to stop making such claims. When Kumar did not respond, Dhar approached the High Court seeking an injunction and damages, calling the statements baseless and harmful to his reputation.
Senior Advocate Birendra Saraf, appearing for Dhar, argued that Kumar’s comments were defamatory and had already caused damage, especially since they were widely circulated. He told the Court that if Kumar had any grievance, he should pursue legal action instead of making public allegations.
Agreeing with this, the Court granted interim protection to Dhar, observing that the situation justified limited relief at this stage.
