Five New Judges Take Oath in Supreme Court, Strength Rises to 37

Today, the Supreme Court welcomed five new judges on Tuesday, increasing its working strength from 32 to 37.

Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant administered the oath of office to Justices Sheel Nagu, Shree Chandrashekhar, Sanjeev Sachdeva, Arun Palli and V. Mohana.

Before joining the Supreme Court, Justices Nagu, Chandrashekhar, Sachdeva and Palli were serving as Chief Justices of different High Courts. Justice V. Mohana was directly elevated from the Bar, making her the only appointee from outside the judiciary.

The appointments come just days after the Centre increased the sanctioned strength of the Supreme Court from 34 to 38 judges through an ordinance.

The five names were recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium headed by CJI Surya Kant last week. The Central government approved the recommendations on June 1, following which the judges were sworn in.
