A fresh petition seeking the cancellation of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s Indian citizenship has been filed in the Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court. The plea also calls for a ban on Gandhi’s foreign travel until the matter is resolved.
Filed by Karnataka resident S V Shishir through the court registry, the petition is currently under preliminary scrutiny and is yet to be listed for hearing. It will be placed before a bench for judicial consideration once cleared by the registry.
This is not Shishir’s first legal challenge on this issue. A similar petition filed earlier was dismissed on May 5 by a division bench comprising Justice A R Masoodi and Justice Rajiv Singh. At that time, the court noted that the petitioner had already submitted a representation to the central government and directed the competent authority to examine it in accordance with the law.
The latest petition reiterates the demand for the cancellation of Gandhi’s citizenship and adds a new request to restrict his international travel during the pendency of the proceedings. The court’s response will hinge on the registry’s clearance and future hearings.
