An accused who allegedly murdered his former partner inside their workplace and then attempted to take his own life was produced before a Mohali court on Tuesday after regaining consciousness following treatment for serious injuries.

Harjinder Singh Mann, who is accused of killing a woman colleague at a logistics firm's office in Phase 11, Mohali, appeared before the court with visible injuries to his neck. Wearing dark glasses and a medical face cover, Mann walked into the court premises without assistance and declined the use of a stretcher or physical support from police personnel.

The court remanded him to judicial custody.

The incident took place on June 4 when Mann allegedly attacked 29-year-old Dimple, his former partner and colleague, inside their office premises. According to the police, the two had previously been in a relationship, which had ended several months earlier.

Preliminary investigations suggest that Mann was unable to accept the end of the relationship and had allegedly been harassing the victim thereafter.

Police said that on the evening of June 4, Mann confronted Dimple at her workplace and allegedly demanded a conversation regarding their past relationship. When she refused, he allegedly attacked her with a knife.

Investigators examining CCTV footage have indicated that the assault unfolded rapidly inside the office. Dimple reportedly attempted to escape, but Mann allegedly chased and attacked her, inflicting multiple injuries.

According to witnesses, when colleagues tried to intervene, the accused allegedly threatened them with the weapon, preventing immediate assistance to the victim.

Police said that after the attack, Mann allegedly slit his own throat with the same weapon and collapsed at the scene.

Both the victim and the accused were rushed to a nearby private hospital. Dimple was declared dead on arrival, while Mann underwent emergency surgery and remained unconscious for several days.

The incident has sparked outrage in the region, with family members, local residents and activists raising concerns about workplace safety and security measures at the corporate office.

On June 5, protesters gathered outside the victim's residence and questioned the adequacy of security arrangements at the office, alleging that the absence of screening mechanisms and access-control measures enabled the accused to enter the premises with a weapon.

Police officials said that following Mann's recovery, investigators have intensified the probe and are recording statements of eyewitnesses in accordance with the provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

The investigation remains ongoing.
