Today, a Sessions Court in North Goa granted bail to Saurabh and Gaurav Luthra, the brothers who owned the Birch by Romeo Lane nightclub in Arpora, in connection with the devastating fire that killed 25 people in December 2025.
The court granted bail to both brothers on a personal bond of ₹50,000 each.
As conditions of their release, they have been directed not to tamper with witnesses or evidence and cannot leave the country without the court's prior permission. A detailed copy of the order is yet to be made available.
The case goes back to the night of December 6, 2025, when a fire broke out at the Birch by Romeo Lane nightclub in North Goa's Arpora. Twenty-five people lost their lives in the blaze, including five foreign tourists, and several others were injured. It remains one of the deadliest fire tragedies in Goa's recent history.
Within hours of the fire, the Luthra brothers fled to Thailand. They were later deported and arrested by Goa Police. The two were booked along with other partners, the club's manager, event organisers and staff under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for offences including culpable homicide not amounting to murder, acts endangering life, and negligent conduct with respect to fire.
Police alleged that the nightclub was operating without the required licences and safety clearances on the night of the incident. Investigators also alleged that a fire show being staged at the venue that evening was conducted without adequate safety precautions — and that this directly led to the blaze. Initial investigations further pointed to negligence in maintaining basic fire-fighting infrastructure at the club.
This is not the first time the brothers appeared before a court seeking relief. A sessions court had rejected their bail pleas back in February, citing the seriousness of the charges. Wednesday's order marks a reversal of that outcome.
Their legal troubles don't end here, however. In a separate but connected FIR, authorities have alleged that documents used to obtain licences for the nightclub were forged. In that case, Saurabh Luthra's anticipatory bail plea was rejected by a North Goa sessions court as recently as March 27. Multiple investigations and regulatory proceedings related to the fire and how the establishment was permitted to operate in the first place are still ongoing.
