A Hyderabad court has sentenced a 44-year-old man to 60 days’ imprisonment for allegedly assaulting and harassing his elderly parents, a day after they approached the police seeking action against him.
The convicted man, identified as G Srinivas, works in the private sector. According to police officials, his parents had been facing continuous mental and physical abuse at home and finally lodged a complaint on May 21 detailing the alleged harassment.
Police said Srinivas had earlier been counselled and warned over his behaviour. However, despite repeated interventions, he allegedly continued to abuse his parents.
The Special Judicial Magistrate Court passed the sentence on Friday after taking note of the complaint filed by the elderly couple.
Reacting to the incident, Hyderabad Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar said that cruelty towards elderly parents is both “inhuman and punishable.” He warned that strict legal action would be taken against individuals found harassing or neglecting senior citizens.
“Parents deserve care, dignity and protection, not fear inside their own homes,” the Commissioner said while stressing the importance of senior citizen safety.
Police officials stated that the Hyderabad City Police has strengthened its Senior Citizen Safety initiatives through regular visits, quicker Dial-100 response systems, spot FIR registration, and direct supervision by senior officers.
Authorities also urged senior citizens facing abuse or neglect to approach the police without hesitation, assuring them of immediate support and legal protection.
Meanwhile, the incident comes close on the heels of the Telangana Assembly passing the ‘Telangana Employees Accountability and Monitoring of Parental Support Bill, 2026’ in March this year.
Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy had said the legislation was intended to strengthen protections for senior citizens beyond the existing provisions of the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007.
The proposed law mandates public representatives, government employees, and private employees to financially support and care for their elderly parents. Failure to do so could result in a deduction of 15% of salary or ₹10,000, whichever is lower, to be paid directly to the parents.
