Justice Surya Kant was formally sworn in today as the 53rd Chief Justice of India at an oath-taking ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
The oath, administered by President Droupadi Murmu, was delivered in Hindi.
Justice Kant will serve as the CJI until February 9, 2027.
The event was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Vice-President CP Radhakrishnan, former CJI BR Gavai, former President Ram Nath Kovind, Union Ministers Hardeep Singh Puri, HD Kumaraswamy, Piyush Goyal, JP Nadda, former Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar, among other dignitaries.
Born on 10 February 1962 in Petwar village, Hisar (Haryana), Justice Kant completed his LLB from Maharishi Dayanand University, Rohtak, in 1984 and started practising the same year in District Courts, Hisar. In 1985, he moved to the Punjab & Haryana High Court, focusing on Constitutional, Service and Civil litigation. On 7 July 2000, he became the youngest Advocate General of Haryana and was designated Senior Advocate, continuing until he was elevated as a Judge of the Punjab & Haryana High Court on 9 January 2004.
He served on the Governing Body of NALSA from 2007-2011 and secured a First Class First in his LLM in 2011. Justice Kant was appointed Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court on 5 October 2018, and later elevated to the Supreme Court on 24 May 2019. Since 14 May 2025, he has been the Executive Chairman of NALSA and is a member of multiple committees of the Indian Law Institute.
