Allahabad High Court judge Justice Yashwant Varma has resigned from his post, writing to President Droupadi Murmu amid ongoing corruption allegations against him.
The controversy began after a fire broke out at his Delhi residence on March 14.
Firefighters reportedly found burnt bundles of cash at the spot. At the time, Justice Varma and his wife were in Madhya Pradesh, while only his daughter and elderly mother were at home.
A video later surfaced showing currency notes burning in the fire.
In his resignation letter, Justice Varma said he was stepping down with “deep anguish” and called it an honour to have served as a judge. He did not go into details about the reasons for his resignation.
Justice Varma has denied all allegations, claiming that he is being framed as part of a conspiracy.
Following the incident, an in-house inquiry was ordered. A three-member committee looked into the matter and submitted its report to the Chief Justice of India. He was then asked to resign or face impeachment. When he refused, the matter was sent to the President and Prime Minister for further action. His judicial work had already been taken away, and he was transferred back to his parent High Court.
In August 2025, the process to remove him formally was also started in Parliament through a Judges Inquiry Committee.
Earlier this year, the Supreme Court refused to stop the inquiry, saying the legal process was being properly followed and there was no violation of rights.
