The Karnataka High Court on Friday issued notice to the State government and other respondents in a petition challenging the decision to conduct a Cauvery Aarti near the Krishnaraja Sagar (KRS) reservoir, citing potential environmental and safety risks.
A division bench comprising Acting Chief Justice V Kameswar Rao and Justice C M Joshi passed the order after hearing initial submissions by Advocate Rajanna R, appearing for petitioner Sunanda Jayaram. The bench directed the respondents to file their reply affidavits within two weeks.
The petition challenges a decision by the State Water Resources Department, which has proposed performing a Cauvery Aarti modeled on the Ganga Aarti. For this purpose, the government has sanctioned ₹92.30 crore to develop supporting infrastructure, including facilities for large gatherings.
Arguing against the move, the petitioner contends that the decision has been taken without due regard for its consequences. The proposed event is expected to draw thousands of people, necessitating the construction of a stadium, vehicle parking, and other amenities. This, the petition argues, poses serious concerns regarding dam safety, water pollution, and ecological disruption in and around the reservoir. It is further apprehended that the initiative could adversely impact agricultural activities across the Cauvery basin.
The plea asserts that the government order is contrary to the provisions of the Dam Safety Act, 2021, and seeks to have the administrative approval quashed. It also seeks an interim stay on the implementation of the project.
