The Supreme Court refused to alter its earlier direction that the members of the Supervisory Committee monitoring the CBI probe into the Karur stampede must not be natives of Tamil Nadu, even if they belong to the Tamil Nadu cadre.
A Bench of Justices JK Maheshwari and Vijay Bishnoi heard the matter.
When Senior Advocate Siddharth Luthra sought modification of Paragraph 33 of the October 13 judgment, Justice Maheshwari responded, “We want everything to be fair.”
Earlier, the Court had constituted a 3-member Supervisory Committee headed by former SC Judge Justice Ajay Rastogi, with two senior IPS officers (IG rank or above) — allowed from the TN cadre but not natives of Tamil Nadu — to ensure impartiality in the CBI investigation.
Today, the Court stood by that direction and declined to modify it.
It also examined a report by the Registrar General of the Madras High Court regarding how a writ petition (seeking SOP for rallies) was registered as a criminal writ. Observing that “there is something wrong” with the High Court, the SC directed that the report be shared with all parties for their response.
