The family of Jayabalakrishnan, who died after a car allegedly driven by a judge’s 17-year-old son hit his scooter in Kerala’s Cheranalloor, has decided to approach the High Court seeking the judge’s removal from service.
The decision comes after nearly 72 hours of protests that drew significant public support. The family said it was suspending the agitation to pursue legal remedies following discussions with the police regarding the steps taken in the case.
While expressing satisfaction over the suspension of four police officers, the family demanded the arrest of both the judge and his son.
“The police showed us all documents saying all avenues for court action are done, and justice is in the domain of the judiciary,” the family said.
Jayabalakrishnan's children told reporters that they would file a writ petition before the High Court, contending that the judge was unfit to continue in office. They also said they would approach the district court, along with the government, seeking cancellation of the teenager's bail.
“This is the time we need to be with our mother. Ultimately, we want the person who killed our father to be caught. He is still out. Our demand is that both the father and son be arrested,” the children said.
The family reiterated that it was temporarily calling off the protest after the police explained the action taken in the case.
“We are satisfied with the action, including the suspension of the four police officers,” Bhadradeepthi, Jayabalakrishnan's daughter, said.
The family added that the police had informed the High Court about the circumstances surrounding the crash and that any further action against the judge would now depend on the judiciary.
