Born on May 3, 1963, in Hyderabad to Smt. Satyavati and the late Justice P. Kodanda Ramayya, Justice Pamidighantam Sri Narasimha has had an illustrious career in the Indian legal landscape.
He completed his undergraduate studies in Economics, Political Science, and Public Administration from Nizam College, Hyderabad, and went on to earn his law degree from the Campus Law Centre, Delhi University, in 1988.
He enrolled as an Advocate the same year and began practicing in the High Court, Civil Courts, and Tribunals in Hyderabad before shifting his counsel practice to the Supreme Court of India. Over the years, he appeared in numerous high-stakes matters, including those heard by Constitution Benches. Early in his career, he served as Commission Counsel for the Justice Chinnappa Reddy Commission and was also a member of the Supreme Court Legal Aid Committee.
In 2008, he was designated as a Senior Advocate by the Full Court of the Supreme Court of India. In this capacity, he appeared in a wide range of public law matters, spanning constitutional, administrative, and environmental issues. He built a strong reputation in specialized areas such as telecommunications, competition law, electricity regulation, and other statutory frameworks. He was appointed amicus curiae in several key matters, including forest conservation, judicial appointments, fast-track courts, and tribal rights.
Justice Narasimha served as Additional Solicitor General of India in 2014. As a Law Officer, he played a pivotal role in landmark cases, notably the challenge to the National Judicial Appointments Commission (NJAC) before a Constitution Bench. His international contributions include representing India before the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) in Hamburg and the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) in The Hague in investment treaty arbitrations. He also presented a paper on extradition and environmental law as part of a Supreme Court delegation to the Canadian Supreme Court.
He has been deeply involved in legal reforms and institutional development. As a member of the Governing Body of NALSA and the Mediation and Conciliation Project Committee (MCPC), he has contributed to access-to-justice initiatives and mediation policy. He was part of a high-powered committee that proposed major reforms to India’s arbitration framework and was closely involved in the formulation of the country’s law on mediation. He also contributed to policy reviews concerning Appellate Tribunals and Corporate Social Responsibility laws and served on the Investor Education and Protection Fund Authority (IEPFA).
In a significant role, the Supreme Court appointed him as Mediator in the BCCI case, where he successfully facilitated consensus on elections and governance reforms within the Board.
Justice Narasimha has also served on the Executive Councils of several National Law Universities and academic institutions, furthering legal education and institutional governance.
He was elevated directly from the Bar to the Supreme Court of India on August 31, 2021, becoming one of the few advocates in recent history to be appointed to the apex court in this manner.
