In a deeply disturbing revelation, the public prosecutor told a Kolkata court that the inhaler given to the 24-year-old law student — who suffered a panic attack before she was allegedly raped at South Calcutta Law College — was not offered out of concern, but to ensure she recovered enough to be brutalised again.
The student, in her complaint, alleged that she was raped on June 25 by 31-year-old Monojit Mishra, a former student of the college, while two others — 19-year-old Zaib Ahmed and 20-year-old Pramit Mukhopadhyay — along with a security guard, abetted the crime. All four have been arrested.
According to the FIR, after suffering a panic attack, the survivor asked for an inhaler. Once she felt better and tried to escape, she was allegedly dragged into the guard’s room, where Mishra raped her while the other two filmed the assault.
Seeking 10-day police custody of the accused, the public prosecutor told the court that medical and electronic evidence was corroborating the survivor’s statement. "The inhaler was not provided for her well-being. It was given so that she could be brutalised again once she recovered," the prosecutor said, stressing the need for continued custodial interrogation.
The defence lawyer, representing Mishra and the two students, claimed his clients were cooperating and alleged that the case was a conspiracy. He questioned whether the survivor’s phone had been seized and whether call detail records had been analysed.
The court granted Kolkata Police custody of Mishra and the two students until July 8. The security guard was remanded to police custody till Friday.
Amid mounting outrage, political connections of Monojit Mishra have also surfaced. After photos of him with Trinamool Congress leaders, including MP Abhishek Banerjee and Health Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya, went public, the TMC acknowledged his association with its student wing but assured this would not affect legal action.
A former student of the college told NDTV that Mishra had a history of criminal behaviour and was feared on campus. “In 2019, he tore a girl’s clothes. In 2024, he beat up a security guard and damaged college property. There were many complaints, but no action was taken because of his political clout,” she said.
She further alleged that most female students at the college had been harassed by Mishra at some point, and that even his parents had disowned him.
