Madras HC Issues Notice On Plea Seeking Saurav Das' Passport, Aadhaar Cancellation

The Madras High Court on Friday issued notice on a petition seeking an investigation into the nationality and background of journalist and Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) spokesperson Saurav Das, along with directions to block his social media accounts over alleged derogatory remarks against the judiciary.

The petition, also seeks cancellation of Das' passport and Aadhaar card if he is found to be a foreign national.

A Division Bench of Chief Justice SA Dharmadhikari and Justice G Arul Murugan issued notice to several respondents, including Das, the Central Government and certain private parties. The matter will be listed for further hearing after six weeks.

The petitioner, Ganesh Kumar, has identified Das in the plea as 'Yogesh Sharma alias Saurav Das' and alleged that he made derogatory statements against the judiciary, including judges of the Supreme Court.

The petition has also sought directions to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs and other authorities to investigate Das' nationality, background and personal details, including those of his parents.

During the hearing, the petitioner's counsel referred to documents annexed to the plea concerning Das' identity and addresses. The Bench examined the documents and sought clarification on certain particulars mentioned in them.

The counsel also brought to the court's attention the statements allegedly made by Das against the judiciary. The Bench questioned the manner in which the statements had been made and asked whether the petitioner had approached the authorities with a complaint.

In response, the petitioner's counsel submitted that a representation had already been made to the Central Government, but no action had been taken.

The petition referred to a representation dated October 7, 2026, and sought directions to the authorities to take appropriate action within a reasonable period fixed by the court.

The petitioner has also sought directions to the Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology to block Das' X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram accounts operating under the name Saurav Das.

Additionally, the plea seeks to restrain Das from making further allegedly derogatory statements concerning the judiciary and judges of the Supreme Court.
