Meghalaya HC Orders Open Selection Trials for State Boxing Representation

The Meghalaya High Court has directed the Meghalaya Boxing Association (MBA) to conduct open trials for all future boxing events where selection of athletes to represent the state is involved.

The directive came from Acting Chief Justice H.S. Thangkhiew while hearing a writ petition filed by Army Boxer Rfn GD Wanbuddien Syngkli. The petitioner challenged the MBA's decision to exclude him from participating in selection trials and boxing events meant to select representatives for the State.

Representing the petitioner, counsel argued that despite holding a valid No Objection Certificate (NOC) and necessary permissions from the Army, Syngkli was not allowed to appear for trials. The MBA reportedly provided no reasons for the denial, prompting the petitioner to seek judicial intervention and clarity on the selection process for aspiring athletes.

The MBA, however, contested the claims, stating that the petitioner never formally offered himself for selection. It further submitted that Syngkli is a qualified coach and, if engaged in that capacity at any event, would be ineligible to participate as a competitor.

Emphasizing fairness and transparency, the Court directed the MBA to conduct open trials in future events. All interested candidates must submit the necessary forms and disclose if they are serving as a coach in the same event. Selection should be based on eligibility criteria specific to the sport, and candidates must be informed of their acceptance or rejection in writing.
