The Supreme Court of India on Tuesday closed a habeas corpus petition filed against the detention of Ladakh activist Sonam Wangchuk after noting that he has already been released.
A Bench of Justices Aravind Kumar and PB Varale disposed of the plea filed by his wife, Gitanjali Angmo, in view of the Centre’s decision to revoke his detention on March 14. The government said it took this step to maintain peace and stability in Ladakh.
During the hearing, Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal asked the Court to keep the matter pending for a few more days, but the Bench refused, saying there was nothing left to decide. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta also supported closing the case.
The Court said that since the detention order had already been withdrawn, the petition no longer served any purpose.
Wangchuk had been detained under the National Security Act after protests in Leh in September 2025 over demands for statehood and Sixth Schedule status for Ladakh. His wife had moved the Court seeking his release.
Earlier, the Court had asked the government to review his detention, especially considering his health. The case saw multiple delays as the Centre sought time to respond and clarify certain evidence.
However, before the Court could give a final decision, the government revoked his detention on March 14, leading to the closure of the case.
