PIL Filed in Delhi HC Over Disappearance of Over 800 People in First 15 Days of 2026

A public interest litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Delhi High Court seeking action over the reported disappearance of more than 800 people in Delhi in the first 15 days of 2026.

The plea was mentioned for urgent hearing today before a Division Bench led by Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia.

However, the Court declined the request for urgent listing and said the matter would be automatically listed in due course.

The lawyer appearing for the petitioner told the Court that the issue was urgent, but said the registry had raised objections to the PIL. She requested that the case be taken up the next day, pointing out that if it was not listed on Wednesday, it would come up on February 18, as the High Court hears PIL matters on Wednesdays.

The Bench, however, said that the Delhi Police are already legally bound to act in such situations. “File it, it will be auto-listed,” the Court said.

The PIL follows a recent news report which claimed that 807 people were reported missing in Delhi between January 1 and January 15, 2026. The report triggered widespread concern among the public.

Soon after, on February 6, the Delhi Police issued a statement on social media, calling the hype around the missing persons data “paid promotion” and warning that action would be taken against those creating panic for monetary benefits.

Meanwhile, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognisance of the reports. It has issued notices to the Delhi government and the Delhi Police Commissioner, seeking a detailed report within two weeks. The NHRC said that if the reported figures are correct, they could raise serious human rights concerns.
