A Magistrate Court in Pune on Tuesday remanded Siya Goyal and her friend, Chetan Chaudhary, to police custody till June 29 in connection with the alleged murder of Goyal's fiancé, Ketan Agarwal.
The case initially appeared to be an accidental death after Ketan reportedly fell from Lohagad Fort near Pune. However, subsequent investigations revealed that he was allegedly pushed to his death as part of a planned conspiracy.
The Lonavala Rural Police subsequently registered a murder case against Siya Goyal and Chetan Chaudhary and arrested both accused.
Advocate Ram Shahane, appearing for Chetan Chaudhary, said the defence opposed the police custody request.
"We strongly opposed police custody and, after considering our arguments, the court granted seven days of police custody to both accused," he said.
Pune Rural Superintendent of Police Sandeep Singh Gill earlier stated that both accused had confessed to the crime during interrogation. According to Gill, Siya Goyal and Ketan Agarwal, who got engaged in February, had visited Lohagad Fort on June 18. Siya initially informed authorities that Ketan had slipped and fallen from the fort, leading to his death.
However, the police began suspecting foul play after speaking to family members and friends, who found the circumstances unusual, especially since Ketan was an experienced trekker.
"Subsequent inquiries and information gathered from relatives and friends raised suspicions. It seemed unlikely for such an accident to occur spontaneously, and the family expressed doubts. A formal complaint was then lodged," Gill said.
During the investigation, police uncovered Siya Goyal's connection with Chetan Chaudhary. The two had reportedly known each other for around a year. Police allege that the pair planned the murder in advance and executed it during the trip to Lohagad Fort by pushing Ketan off the cliff.
"Through confidential sources, witness statements and technical evidence, it was revealed that Siya Goyal and Chetan Chaudhary conspired and pushed Ketan Agarwal to his death. Both have been taken into custody and further investigation is underway," Gill said.
Meanwhile, Ketan Agarwal's father said that if Siya did not want to marry his son, she could have simply called off the wedding.
Expressing grief over the loss of his 26-year-old son, he questioned the motive behind the alleged crime and described the accused's mindset as cruel.
He also revealed that the couple had planned a trip to Bali on June 6 along with two others. However, Ketan could not travel because his passport had been stolen at the airport.
According to him, Chetan later arrived at Lohagad Fort on a two-wheeler, and the two accused allegedly attacked Ketan with an object before throwing him off the fort.
He praised Pune Rural Police and SP Sandeep Singh Gill for swiftly solving the case and arresting both accused.
The bereaved father has also appealed for a fast-track trial and sought the strictest punishment for the accused.
"My only appeal to the government is that this case should be fast-tracked and the accused should be punished as quickly as possible. They deserve the strictest possible punishment to send a strong message," he said.
