Gurugram Police on Saturday clarified that 25-year-old former state-level tennis player Radhika Yadav, who was allegedly shot dead by her father, did not operate her own tennis academy as previously reported.
Instead, she trained aspiring players by booking courts at various locations—a practice her father, Deepak Yadav, had strongly opposed.
Radhika was allegedly shot at point-blank range by her 49-year-old father at their double-story residence in the Sushant Lok area of Sector 57, Gurugram, on Thursday. The murder shocked the city and led to widespread speculation regarding the motive.
Initially, police had stated that Radhika ran a tennis academy and that tensions had escalated between her and her father, with Deepak allegedly being taunted for relying on his daughter’s income. However, investigators now say Deepak was financially independent, with rental income from multiple properties, and was not dependent on Radhika's earnings.
"Radhika did not have a formal academy. She trained aspirants by booking tennis courts at different venues. Her father had repeatedly asked her to stop conducting these sessions, but she declined. This became the main source of conflict," an investigating officer stated on Saturday.
Deepak Yadav, who has confessed to the killing, was produced before a local court on Friday and remanded to one-day police custody. During his remand, police recovered five bullets and one live cartridge from their Sector 57 residence. As part of the ongoing investigation, he was also taken to a village in Pataudi. He is set to be produced before the court again on Saturday.
In the aftermath of Radhika’s death, several unverified claims circulated on social media, including speculation that her presence in a music video and aspirations to become a social media influencer triggered the crime. Police have dismissed these theories.
“The music video was released in 2023 and has no connection to the murder. The accused has consistently stated that his objection was to her conducting training sessions, not her social media presence,” said Inspector Vinod Kumar from Sector 56 Police Station.
According to a relative, Deepak had supported Radhika’s tennis career from her early years but had recently grown uncomfortable with her professional choices. The post-mortem revealed she had sustained four gunshot wounds—three in the back and one in the shoulder.
Radhika’s last rites were performed on Friday at the family’s ancestral village in Wazirabad.
