Today, the Supreme Court directed actor Karisma Kapoor to file her reply within two weeks on the maintainability of a fresh application filed by Priya Kapur, who has sought details of Karisma Kapoor’s divorce proceedings with her late former husband, businessman Sunjay Kapur, concluded in 2016.
The matter was listed before a bench headed by Justice A.S. Chandurkar and was heard in chambers.
During the hearing, Karisma Kapoor’s lawyers opposed Priya Kapur’s application, arguing that it was not maintainable since the consent terms and divorce decree had already been placed on record by Priya Kapur in a separate case pending before the Delhi High Court involving Karisma Kapoor’s two children.
Priya Kapur’s counsel, however, told the court that the application was filed to obtain access to these records so that the complete factual background could be placed before courts dealing with the ongoing estate dispute. Karisma Kapoor’s children are currently locked in a legal battle with Priya Kapur over Sunjay Kapur’s estate, estimated at around ₹30,000 crore. They have alleged that the will attributed to their late father was forged by their stepmother.
Senior advocate Maninder Singh, appearing for Priya Kapur, said clarity on the 2016 divorce settlement is necessary to assess whether the issues now being raised by the children were already addressed and settled during Sunjay Kapur’s lifetime.
Priya Kapur had filed the fresh application in November 2025, seeking certified copies of pleadings, documents and orders related to the divorce proceedings between Karisma Kapoor and Sunjay Kapur.
Opposing the plea, Karisma Kapoor’s lawyers Ravi Sharma and Apoorv Shukla termed the application “frivolous” and said it was an attempt to dig out personal and confidential family court records.
After hearing the submissions, the Supreme Court asked Karisma Kapoor to place her objections on record within two weeks. No formal notice has been issued in the matter so far.
Karisma Kapoor and Sunjay Kapur had amicably settled their matrimonial dispute in 2016 through mutual consent. The Supreme Court had recorded the consent terms, under which Karisma Kapoor was granted custody of their two children, while Sunjay Kapur was given visitation rights. At the time, it was stated before the court that all disputes between the couple had been fully resolved.
