The Supreme Court of India has granted a nine-month extension to complete the trial in the murder case of Sheena Bora, while making it clear that no further extension will be allowed.
The extension was granted after the Special Judge of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court at the City Civil and Sessions Court in Greater Bombay wrote to the apex court seeking more time to finish the trial.
A Bench of Justices M. M. Sundresh and N. Kotiswar Singh allowed the request and extended the deadline by nine months.
“Considering the request, the time to complete the trial is extended by nine months. However, no further request for extension will be entertained,” the Court said.
The Bench also allowed the main accused, Indrani Mukerjea—the mother of the deceased—to file a fresh application seeking permission to travel abroad, as mentioned in an earlier order dated February 12, 2025.
Mukerjea was arrested in 2015 and chargesheeted under Sections 120B (criminal conspiracy), 364 (kidnapping), 302 (murder), and 201 (destruction of evidence) of the Indian Penal Code.
According to the CBI, Bora was murdered in 2012 by Mukerjea with the help of her former husband Sanjeev Khanna, then-husband Peter Mukerjea (divorced in 2018), and driver Shyamvar Rai. The murder came to light in 2015 after Rai revealed details of the crime following his arrest in another case.
Mukerjea was granted bail by the Supreme Court in 2022 after the Court noted that she had already spent more than six and a half years in jail.
