SC Grants Interim Bail to Mother of Teen Accused in Pune Porsche Crash

The Supreme Court on Tuesday granted interim bail to the mother of the teenage boy accused in the Pune Porsche crash case, which claimed the lives of two software engineers when a speeding car rammed into their motorcycle.

The 49-year-old woman, mother of the primary accused, was arrested for allegedly tampering with evidence by facilitating the swapping of her son's blood sample in a bid to shield him from prosecution.

A bench led by Justice B R Gavai observed that the accused’s mother had already undergone over 10 months of incarceration. The court was hearing her plea alongside two other matters, all of which raised a common legal question regarding the right of accused individuals to be informed of the grounds of arrest—either prior to detention or immediately thereafter.

While reserving its verdict on the broader constitutional issue, the bench granted interim relief to the petitioner in view of the extended period of her custody.

The petitioner had approached the Supreme Court after the Bombay High Court denied her request for interim bail. Her legal counsel, Senior Advocate Vikram Chaudhary and Advocate Nikhil Jain, argued that the arrest was unlawful as the investigating agency failed to provide her with the grounds for detention at the time of her arrest.

Earlier, in June 2024, the teen’s father—also accused of being involved in the manipulation of blood sample evidence—was granted bail by a Pune district court.

The teenage driver, whose vehicle struck the two IT professionals on the night of May 19, 2024, was sent to an observation home until June 5, 2024, following the fatal crash.
