SC Orders Status Quo on Alleged Encroachments at Bale Shah Peer Dargah in Uttan

The Supreme Court on Monday directed that status quo be maintained concerning the alleged unauthorized constructions at the Bale Shah Peer Dargah located in Uttan.

A Bench comprising Chief Justice of India BR Gavai and Justice AG Masih issued notice to the Maharashtra government in response to a petition challenging the State’s decision to carry out demolition.

"List after four weeks. Dasti permitted. Serve to standing counsel of Maharashtra. Till next date there shall be status quo as on today," the Court ordered.

According to media reports, the demolition was announced by Maharashtra Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule in the State Legislative Council. The Minister’s remarks came in response to a query raised by legislator Niranjan Davkhare.

It has been alleged that the Bale Shah Peer Charitable Trust encroached upon protected mangrove land owned by the government near the ecologically sensitive Chowk Jetty area in Uttan, situated near Bhayandar.

“The Minister made a statement in the Assembly that it would be demolished,” the Bench was informed.
