SC Seeks Delhi Govt’s Response on Bail Plea of Tasleem Ahmed in 2020 Delhi Riots Conspiracy Case

Today, the Supreme Court issued notice to the Delhi government on a bail plea filed by Tasleem Ahmed, an accused in the 2020 Delhi Riots conspiracy case.

The notice was issued by a Bench of Justices Aravind Kumar and PB Varale.

Case Brief:

Ahmed’s bail plea comes after the Delhi High Court denied him relief in September last year. He had previously been refused bail by the trial court in 2022. Ahmed’s case was de-tagged from the other accused at the request of his counsel.

The accused in the larger conspiracy case include Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam, Mohd Saleem Khan, Shifa Ur Rehman, Athar Khan, Meeran Haider, Shadab Ahmed, Abdul Khalid Saifi, and Gulfisha Fatima.

During the course of hearing, Ahmed’s counsel argued that he was only a participant in anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protests and was wrongly arrested on terror charges on June 24, 2020.

Further, the plea highlighted the delay in trial and the time he has already spent in custody.

Ahmed is represented by Advocates Mehmood Pracha, RHA Sikander, along with Jatin Bhatt, Sanawar, Kshitij Singh, Nujhat Naseem, Sikander Raza, and Kumail Abbas.
