SC to Consider Plea for Installing Lion Capital of Ashoka on Court Dome

Today, the Supreme Court said it will consider, on the administrative side, a petition seeking to install India’s national emblem—the Lion Capital of Ashoka—on the main dome of the apex court building.

A division comprsing, Justice Surya Kant, along with Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul M Pancholi, noted that a new Supreme Court building complex is currently under construction.

Further, CJI Kant added that the proposal to install the national emblem on the Court’s main dome could be considered as part of the new building project.

The Court closed the plea filed by Badaravada Venugopal in the matter.

It also directed the Secretary General of the Supreme Court to place the petitioner’s representation before the competent authority for consideration.

“The Secretary General is directed to place this note before the competent authority. This issue needs to be dealt with on the administrative side,” the Court ordered.

During the hearing, the petitioner told the Court that he had earlier written to the Supreme Court administration suggesting that India’s national emblem be added to the main building’s dome.

“I received a reply from the Supreme Court in November stating that the Court uses its own logo,” he added.

However, CJI Surya Kant observed that the earlier decision may have been taken before he assumed office in late November 2025. “Perhaps the decision was before November 24. Anyway, we will see,” he said, before disposing of the petition.

Notably, the Supreme Court’s seal already incorporates elements inspired by the Lion Capital, along with a wheel and the motto “यतो धर्मस्ततो जयः” (Where there is dharma, there is victory).

While the Court uses such emblematic imagery in its official seal, it has not installed the national emblem physically on the building’s dome.

In 2024, during the tenure of DY Chandrachud, the Supreme Court redesigned its logo to feature the Ashoka Chakra, the Court building, and the Constitution of India on a blue background, along with the text “Supreme Court of India” and “यतो धर्मस्ततो जयः” in Devanagari.
