SC Urges Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to Assemble Additional Legal Team for Simultaneous Case Load

For two consecutive days, the Supreme Court has advised Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to consider appointing additional counsel to support him in managing multiple concurrent cases being presented before the court.

Yesterday, Justices BR Gavai and Sandeep Mehta emphasized the importance of Solicitor General Tushar Mehta establishing a secondary team, stating, "You must also develop a second line, Mr. Mehta..."

The court made this remark after the Solicitor General requested permission to appear at 2 PM due to his prior engagement before the Constitution Bench in another case. It's worth mentioning that during this session, the bench was considering West Bengal's plea contesting the CBI's investigation into cases within the state without obtaining consent.

"This is why yesterday we had remarked that we need more Tushar Mehtas. There should be some alternate accommodation...", Justice Gavai added, underscoring the necessity for additional legal representatives akin to Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to handle such situations.

During today's proceedings, while the matter was being discussed, the bench hinted once more at the possibility of engaging more counsels to represent the Solicitor General and continue the arguments on his behalf.

"The difficulty is, there are domain experts..that is the problem..if there is a core criminal case, I would like Raju (ASG) to address it..", the Solicitor General responded.

These remarks have been made by court in the backdrop of adjournments being sought when the law officers representing government functionaries are on their legs in a different court.
