Sonam Wangchuk’s Wife Moves Supreme Court Against His Detention Under NSA

In a major development, Gitanjali Angmo, wife of noted Ladakhi social activist and education reformer Sonam Wangchuk, has approached the Supreme Court challenging his detention.

The writ petition, filed under Article 32 of the Constitution, was moved yesterday after Wangchuk was taken into custody on September 26 under the National Security Act, in connection with the protests in Ladakh demanding statehood for the Union Territory.

Through the habeas corpus plea, Angmo has sought the release of her husband, who has reportedly been lodged in Jodhpur jail (Rajasthan) following his arrest in the aftermath of violent clashes in Ladakh.

In a social media post, she stated, “I have approached the Supreme Court of India with a habeas corpus petition against Wangchuk’s detention. It has been one week, yet I have no information about his health, his condition, or the grounds for his detention.”

The matter is likely to be mentioned for urgent listing once the Supreme Court resumes work on October 6 after the Dussehra vacation.

Wangchuk, a Ramon Magsaysay awardee and celebrated innovator, has been a leading voice on social and environmental concerns in Ladakh.
