Speaker Likely to Set Up Panel to Probe Justice Yashwant Varma in Coming Days

The Lok Sabha Speaker is expected to form a three-member inquiry panel in the next 8 to 10 days to look into allegations against Justice Yashwant Varma of the Allahabad High Court.

This comes after two separate removal motions were submitted by Members of Parliament—one signed by 152 MPs and another by 63. Before moving forward, officials are verifying all the signatures, which is a necessary step before the Speaker can formally accept the motion.

Sources say the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha secretariats are working together on setting up the inquiry committee, which is required under the Judges (Inquiry) Act, 1968. The committee will have one Supreme Court judge (or the Chief Justice), one High Court Chief Justice, and a well-known jurist.

The Speaker is expected to write to the Chief Justice of India to suggest names for the judges, while the Speaker will choose the jurist.

Justice Varma has been accused of judicial misconduct in what’s being called the “cash-in-kothi” case. Once the panel is formed, it will examine the charges and submit its report to the Speaker. The final decision may be taken up during Parliament’s Winter Session.

Top political leaders like Home Minister Amit Shah and Rajya Sabha Leader of the House JP Nadda have been involved in discussions about the way forward. Speaker Om Birla and Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh also held meetings with senior officials to make sure the process follows all rules.

As per the Constitution, a High Court judge can only be removed if both Houses of Parliament support the motion, and only after an inquiry is conducted. The formation of this panel is a key step in that process.
