In a heartfelt farewell on Tuesday, senior lawyers and judges gathered in Courtroom 1 of the Supreme Court of India to pay tribute to Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna, who demits office today.
Known for his humility, clarity of thought, and steadfast integrity, CJI Khanna leaves behind a legacy marked by judicial sensitivity and administrative transparency.
Sitting alongside him on the ceremonial bench, Justices BR Gavai and PV Sanjay Kumar offered warm tributes. Justice Gavai, who will take over as the next Chief Justice, praised CJI Khanna for his deeply reasoned judgments and unwavering commitment to human rights.
"In both his judicial and administrative roles, he has carved out a distinct legacy," Justice Gavai said. "From ensuring the disclosure of judges’ assets to promoting transparency in the system, he has exemplified what it means to be a true gentleman of the court. His humility and calm demeanor were always evident."
Recalling the legacy of Justice HR Khanna—CJI Khanna’s uncle and a legendary judge who famously dissented in the ADM Jabalpur case during the Emergency—Justice Gavai noted that CJI Khanna continued the family’s tradition of courage and constitutional commitment.
Justice PV Sanjay Kumar admired CJI Khanna’s remarkable memory and attention to detail. “He never made notes. Everything—paragraphs, page numbers, case details—was stored in his mind. And despite decades on the bench, his patience with unprepared lawyers never wore thin,” he said.
Attorney General R Venkataramani commended CJI Khanna’s emphasis on liberty and institutional integrity. “Your judgments have brought simplicity and clarity to complex questions of law. Your departure leaves a void that won’t be easily filled,” he said.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta echoed these sentiments, saying, “Justice HR Khanna would be proud today. Your judgments have always been concise yet impactful. You have always ensured that lawyers were heard, and your commitment to civil liberties has been unwavering.”
SCBA President Kapil Sibal described CJI Khanna as a “beacon light” for future judges. “You are like that rare streak of light in the sky. Your courage, transparency, and encouragement to junior lawyers will be long remembered,” he said.
SCAORA President Vipin Nair highlighted the generational legacy of judicial courage in the Khanna family. “You steadied the ship in times of turbulence. It’s clear that the DNA of courage runs deep in your family,” he noted.
Additional Solicitor General SV Raju referenced recent high-profile decisions, saying, “In the Kejriwal case, you charted a new course in bail jurisprudence. Your quiet strength through trials by fire is deeply respected.”
Several senior advocates also shared personal anecdotes. Raju Ramachandran called CJI Khanna’s career “proof that the essence of judging lies in how justice is delivered.” Balbir Singh recalled a powerful moment when CJI Khanna asserted that judges must leave their personal religion at the door when they take the Bench.
Senior Advocate Sanjay Hegde wished him peace and good health, while Vibha Datta Makhija said, “You led from the front. The Bar holds your tenure in the highest regard.”
AM Singhvi appreciated CJI Khanna’s continued engagement with the Bar, and Dushyant Dave praised him for strengthening the Supreme Court both judicially and administratively.
Senior Advocate Menaka Guruswamy drew a parallel between CJI Khanna and cricket legend Virat Kohli, who is also retiring this week. “Both are sons of India whose commitment and integrity have inspired millions. You reminded us that defending the Constitution begins with integrity,” she said.
Senior Advocates Adish C Aggarwala, Shadan Farasat, and Prashanta Chandra Sen also reflected on CJI Khanna’s legacy. Chandra Sen recounted that even CJI Khanna’s grandfather, Justice Sarb Dyal Khanna, had once dissented in a case—showing that judicial independence runs deep in the family.
CJI Khanna, visibly moved, reflected on the trust the judiciary commands: “It must be earned, not demanded. Bench and Bar together form the judiciary, and public trust in us is paramount. Each judge brings unique experiences that enrich our collective understanding of justice.”
As he concluded, CJI Khanna expressed full faith in his successor. “Justice Gavai has been my strongest support. In him, the court will have a Chief Justice committed to upholding civil liberties and fundamental rights.”
