The Supreme Court on Friday directed that elections to the five municipal corporations in Bengaluru be conducted in December 2026, considering the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Karnataka.
A Bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi, and Justice V. Mohana noted that the electoral roll revision exercise is expected to be completed by November 2026. In view of this, the Court ordered that the civic elections be held the following month.
"In view of the fact that Karnataka is having SIR and process will be completed in November, it is directed that elections of all five corporations be held in December, 2026," the Bench said.
The direction was issued after Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for the State of Karnataka, sought time in light of the ongoing revision process. The Court had earlier fixed August 31, 2026, as the deadline for completing the elections to the Bengaluru municipal corporations.
