Two-time Olympic medallist wrestler Sushil Kumar has officially rejoined Northern Railway after being granted bail in the high-profile murder case involving fellow wrestler Sagar Dhankar, sources told IANS.
Kumar, once the face of Indian wrestling with an Olympic bronze in 2008 and silver in 2012, had been in judicial custody since 2021. The Delhi High Court recently granted him bail, citing significant delays in the trial proceedings. While the legal case remains pending, the bail has enabled him to resume his role in the public sector.
Currently posted as a Senior Commercial Manager, Kumar reported for duty earlier this week dressed in formal attire, maintaining a low profile amid growing media attention. His reinstatement, railway officials confirmed, followed established service rules.
Public opinion on his return has been divided. While critics question the reinstatement of a murder accused, others have pointed out that Kumar has not yet been convicted and is entitled to continue his professional duties under the law.
Kumar's dramatic fall—from Olympic glory to a criminal courtroom—has shocked the nation. For now, however, the embattled athlete appears intent on quietly resuming routine life, even as the shadow of the ongoing case continues to follow him.
