Tamil Nadu Bar Council barred nine lawyers facing criminal charges from appearing before courts and tribunals

By way of an interim order, the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry has barred nine advocates charged with criminal offences from practising in courts, tribunals, or before any authority in India.

The Bar Council stated in a notification issued on December 6 that the lawyers cannot practise until the disciplinary proceedings initiated by the bar body are resolved.

The nine lawyers that are involved in this proceedings are: 
- V Nandagopalan;
-A Prabhu;
- R Raja Ganapathy;
- S Perumal;
- A Ramesh;
- P Pon Pandian;
- S Muthachi;
- Roja Ramkumar;
- T Arun Pandian.

All of these lawyers have been charged with offences ranging from kidnapping to misappropriation of funds, job racketing, and forgery under the Indian Penal Code. Some are also facing charges under the Juvenile Justice Act and the POCSO Act.

According to the notification, "It is hereby notified for the general information of the public that the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry had passed prohibitory order against the following advocates from practicing as advocates in all courts, tribunals and other authorities in India either in their name or in any assumed name."

The Tamil Nadu and Puducherry Bar Council had previously suspended six lawyers from appearing before any court or tribunal because they were facing criminal proceedings under the Indian Penal Code on charges ranging from information suppression to attempted murder and cases under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO Act).
