Justice Alok Kumar Verma of the Uttarakhand High Court has tendered his resignation from the office of Judge, months before his scheduled retirement in August 2026.
According to a notification issued by the Ministry of Law and Justice on May 27, 2026, Justice Verma's resignation took effect from April 30, 2026, in accordance with proviso (a) to clause (1) of Article 217 of the Constitution of India.
The notification states:
"Justice Alok Kumar Verma has tendered his resignation from the office of Judge, Uttarakhand High Court, in pursuance of proviso (a) to clause (1) of Article 217 of the Constitution, with effect from 30.04.2026."
Born on August 16, 1964, in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, Justice Verma completed his graduation from DAV (PG) Degree College, Varanasi, and obtained his LL.B. degree from Harish Chandra Postgraduate College in 1985.
He joined the Uttar Pradesh Judicial Service in 1987 and was first posted as Munsif (Civil Judge, Junior Division) at Jhansi. During his judicial career, he served in several districts across Uttar Pradesh before opting for judicial service in Uttarakhand after the creation of the State in November 2000.
In Uttarakhand, Justice Verma held various important positions, including District Judge in Tehri Garhwal, Chamoli, Udham Singh Nagar, and Dehradun. He also served as the Principal Secretary, Law-cum-Legal Remembrancer to the Government of Uttarakhand.
Justice Verma was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Uttarakhand High Court on May 22, 2019, and took oath on May 27, 2019. He was elevated as a Permanent Judge of the High Court on May 25, 2021.
His resignation marks the end of a judicial career spanning nearly four decades in the subordinate judiciary and the High Court.
