Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned from his post on Monday, saying he was stepping down on health grounds. In a letter to the President, which he also shared on X (formerly Twitter), Dhankhar said he was resigning with immediate effect to focus on his health and follow medical advice.
"To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as the Vice President of India, effective immediately, in accordance with Article 67(a) of the Constitution," he wrote.
Dhankhar thanked President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for their support during his tenure. “I extend my deepest gratitude to the Hon’ble President for her unwavering support and the cordial working relationship we shared. I’m also thankful to the Prime Minister and the Council of Ministers. The Prime Minister’s cooperation has been invaluable, and I’ve learned a lot during my time in office,” he said.
Jagdeep Dhankhar was sworn in as the 14th Vice President of India on August 11, 2022. Born in 1951 in Rajasthan, he studied law at the University of Rajasthan and was designated a Senior Advocate by the Rajasthan High Court in 1990.
His public life spans several decades—he’s been a Member of Parliament, a state legislator, and even served as a Union Minister in the 1990s. More recently, from 2019 to 2022, he was the Governor of West Bengal, where he frequently clashed with the state government.
As Vice President and Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha, Dhankhar often made headlines for his sharp exchanges in Parliament and his outspoken views on the judiciary.
