Azam Khan Approaches SC Against ED Arrest After Release In Dual PAN Card Case

Samajwadi Party leader Mohd Azam Khan has moved the Supreme Court challenging his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) shortly after his release from jail in a separate case.

The matter was mentioned before Chief Justice of India Surya Kant by advocate Nizam Pasha. The CJI agreed to list the matter for hearing this week.

Case Brief:

Khan and his son Abdullah Azam were granted bail by the Allahabad High Court on October 29 in the dual PAN card case. The High Court suspended Khan's 10-year sentence but refused to stay his conviction.

The two were released from Rampur jail on October 31. However, shortly after his release, Khan was detained by an ED team waiting outside the prison in connection with a separate money laundering case relating to alleged financial irregularities involving Mohammad Ali Jauhar University.

On November 1, a special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court in Ghaziabad remanded Khan to 14 days of judicial custody.

The ED's money laundering case concerns allegations that agricultural land belonging to farmers was forcibly occupied for the construction of Mohammad Ali Jauhar University.

The agency initiated proceedings against Khan and others based on around 26 FIRs registered by the Uttar Pradesh Police in 2019.
