The Delhi High Court’s strength has increased to 50 judges after seven new judges were sworn in on Monday.

The High Court has a sanctioned strength of 60 judges, including 45 permanent judges and 15 additional judges.

Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya administered the oath to Justices Nivedita Anil Sharma, Nisha Sahay Saxena, Sanjay Sharma, Bharat Parashar, Aditi Choudhary, Dinesh Bhatt and Arun Bhardwaj at a ceremony held at the High Court premises.

Justices Nivedita Anil Sharma and Nisha Sahay Saxena have been appointed as permanent judges and took their oath in English. The remaining five have been appointed as additional judges and took their oath in Hindi.

Before their elevation, the seven judges had held various positions in the Delhi judiciary and other courts.

Justice Bharat Parashar was serving as the Secretary General of the Supreme Court, while Justice Arun Bhardwaj was working as the Registrar General of the Delhi High Court on deputation.

Justices Nisha Sahay Saxena, Sanjay Sharma and Dinesh Bhatt were serving as Principal District and Sessions Judges at Rohini, Karkardooma and Rouse Avenue courts respectively.

Justices Nivedita Anil Sharma and Aditi Choudhary had retired from the district judiciary. Their names had earlier been recommended for elevation to the High Court.

The Central government notified the appointments on September 19, following the recommendation of the Supreme Court Collegium.

After administering the oath, Chief Justice Upadhyaya congratulated the newly appointed judges.
