Mumbai Police Direct Actor Imran Khan To Leave India By October 28 After CJP Protest

Mumbai Police has directed actor Imran Khan to leave India by October 28, days after he participated in a protest organised by the satirical political group Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) in Mumbai.

The police said they had initiated action against Khan under the relevant provisions of the Immigration Act because he participated in the protest despite not being an Indian citizen.

“Action has been taken against Imran Khan under the relevant provision of the Immigration Act over his participation in the protest despite not being an Indian citizen,” the police said.

The action follows a complaint by BJP leader Kirit Somaiya, who approached the Mumbai Police alleging that Khan holds US citizenship and an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card rather than full Indian citizenship. Somaiya also sought action against the actor for participating in an “illegal political agitation” and allegedly violating OCI provisions and visa conditions.

Khan, nephew of Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan, joined the protest at Mumbai’s August Kranti Maidan on October 10 against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. His partner, actor Lekha Washington, and cousin Zayne Marie Khan also participated in the demonstration. The police detained all three and later released them.

After his detention, Khan shared a photograph of himself inside a police van on social media with the caption, “Apparently I'm going for a drive”.

A video of the actor saying “Jai Hind” to police personnel also went viral. In another video, Khan questioned the reason for his detention and said the police had picked up protesters from the streets and directed them to sit inside police vans.

“I honestly don't know why I have been brought here. They picked all of us from the streets and asked us to sit in the vans,” he said. Khan added that the police drove him and the other detainees around for approximately two hours before releasing them.

The Mumbai Police detained around 400 people during the CJP protest. The detainees included members of the Tushar Gandhi-led organisation ‘Hum Bharat Ke Log’ and activists associated with the Communist Party of India (Marxist).
