The Central government on Friday cleared the appointment of eight advocates as additional judges of the Calcutta High Court.

Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal announced the appointments in a post on X.

The eight advocates appointed as additional judges are:

• Aryak Dutt

• Atarup Banerjee

• Sandip Kumar De

• Partha Pratim Roy

• Sudip Deb

• Anuj Singh

• Arjun Ray Mukherjee

• Rishad Medora

The appointments come after the Supreme Court Collegium had in May recommended nine advocates for elevation to the Calcutta High Court.

However, the Centre has approved only eight of the nine recommendations. The name of advocate Indranil Roy, who was also recommended by the Collegium, does not figure in the government's notification issued on Friday.

The latest appointments come at a time when the Calcutta High Court continues to face a significant shortage of judges. The High Court currently has 41 sitting judges against its sanctioned strength of 72, leaving 31 posts vacant.
